Liz Fletcher

Born in London of two professional singers - an English contralto mother and an Irish tenor father - and later acquiring a sax playing step-father, Liz has been surrounded by music all her life.

Initially, she studied dance, singing and drama at Corona Academy, London and on leaving worked mainly as a dancer. However, she was soon singing backing vocals in between shows and this led to her being given a solo singing spot in her first summer season.

Whilst featuring in musical productions, with the Omnibus Theatre Company, her singing began to take priority. Work as a backing vocalist with many internationally known artists took her throughout Europe and to the Far East. She sang at major venues such as the Monte Carlo Sporting Club and recorded with Grace Kennedy, David Grant and Herbie Armstrong.

In Italy, Liz was offered a recording contract. She made a successful single at Central Park Studios in Florence and performed on T.V. and at festivals.

At this time, Liz was becoming more interested in jazz singing and Norma Winstone encouraged her to get involved with Michael Garrick's Jazz Mass. This experience inspired her to further explorations in the genre.

In 1991, with Ceri Evans, Alec Dankworth and Clark Tracey, Liz drew an immensely enthusiastic response from the audience at the Ealing Jazz Festival and her performances with her own band have been highlights of the Festival every year since then.

Liz supported Nina Simone whilst singing at a Festival in Greece and supported Van Morrison and Georgie Fame at The Café de Paris for Prince Edward's Birthday Party. In 2000 and 2001, she was invited to sing at Ronnie Scott's Club, London.

In 1997, Liz recorded her debut album, "Mellow Mania", on the Black Box label, which attracted praise following airings on Jazz FM and Radio 3, plus glowing reviews in Jazz magazines and earned 3 stars in 'Jazzwise'.

This was followed by another album, "Liz Fletcher Live In The Park", also on the Black Box label, in 1999. Live and on CD, Liz mixes standards and outstanding original songs by composer-lyricist, Rupert Wates.

Currently expanding on her abilities, Liz has been writing herself and has had some success with a single called "Liz's Balloon", taken from an album called "45 Dip The Acid Lounge", which was released on Jazz FM's label, Hed Kandi, and has already been picked up by other labels for their own compilations.

Liz's latest CD is an album of original songs, written for her by Robert Wates and entitled "For The Record".
